AvenCentral Projects (Community)

Avenham & Miller Parks Refurbishment
Avenham & Miller Parks Refurbishment The project is restoring the grade II listed parks back to the original Victorian design and make them more accessible for the community. The refurbishment will include better lighting, safer and improved path surfaces for walking and wheelchairs and better drained grassed areas which will enable more outdoor events to take place. A resource centre will provide a programme of environmental activities and a new bandstand will provide an increased capacity for a wide mix of organised events.

Community Radio
Community Radio Preston FM has developed a community radio station to provide local people with a voice in Preston. The FM radio station, which broadcasts on temporary licence, features both spoken word and music programmes and is directed by what local people want to hear. Media training in the form of interviewing, pre recording, presenting, and station management is offered to encourage would-be DJ’s, community journalists and reporters to become involved. Managers of the project, Prescap (Preston Community Arts Project) have established a recording studio in the city centre.

Harris Museum & Art Gallery - Creating Connection to Local Treasure
Harris Museum & Art Gallery - Creating Connection to Local Treasure The Harris Museum and Art Gallery has been awarded funding to purchase a dynamic display and interpretation programme for the Decorative Art Ceramics and Glass collection. There are almost 2,500 items in the collection, some dating back to 1600s, plus the largest historic scent bottle collection in Britain. The Harris also has the largest public collection of Preston Guild commemoratives. At present this fascinating display is barely noticed due to inadequate and outdated display cases. The funding from AvenCentral will provide new modern burglar proof cases that will replace 25 year old cabinets to enable the collections to be displayed in an exciting, informative and eye catching way.

The project will provide interpretation information for the large collection of scent bottles and ceramics that the Harris currently has stored. As well as this work the funding will also help with the purchase of new accessible cases for the collection to be stored in allowing the collection to be viewed within the galleries.
